sdp-mix-side1

Sonido del principe just sent to me this morning his latest mix named cumbia 4 life.

Since a while, we used to get some crazy heavy bass cumbia remix from him on the net, bersa disco and cabeza, and he made it again with a new mixtape with plenty of new remix and edit.

Like he said: “CUMBIA is not a fad, not a passing moment of South American hipness. CUMBIA is a feeling that grabs your heart. For Sonido Del Principe, it’s CUMBIA 4 LIFE!”

Be careful, the guy will touring this autumn in south and north america.

NOVALIMA IN THE MIX

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Sonido Martines is busy dragging 80kilos of his life across Latin America (via bus), and Benoit has escaped the grid somewhere gorgeous in Newfoundland or somesuch, so I’m holding down La Congona single-handed.

novalima

First up, a breezy mix by Novalima, who are playing NYC’s Le Pouisson Rouge (w/ support from Geko Jones) on July 16th.

This one kicks it with new versions of chicha classics by Juaneco “ya se ha muerto mi abuelo”, Los Mirlos, etc. and afro-peruvian grooves, tasteful clubby edits holding it all together.

Novalima – Selector v1 mix

they say:

1.- “La danza de los Mirlos (novalima remix)”*unreleased. Los Mirlos traditional 70′s cumbia reversion by Bareto, cumbia revival band from lima, remixed by novalima)
2.- “Macaco (novalima remix)”*unreleased – Batata y su Son Palenquero , one of the greatest afro colombian artists, our friend Lucas Silva “Champeta Man” gave us the tracks of this great trad song to remix)
3.- “El abuelo (novalima remix) – Bareto” *unreleased. Made popular by Juaneco y su Combo in the 70′s, another cumbia reversion by Bareto remixed by novalima
4.- “Tumbala” (da lata remix) this is a great afrobeat-brazilian remix by chris frank whom we’ve known since the “afro” sessions in london back in 2004, with additional vocals by da lata’s nina miranda. This track digs out cotito’s “lost verse” from tumbala which somehow didnt make it into the original version in the album
5.- “el niche” sabor y control. Our favorite peruvian salsa dura band, led by bruno majer (who sings mujer ajena in coba coba) and constantino, novalima’s timbales player
6.- “bandolero (kv5 remix)” great remix in a jamaican stylee by marc lee from london based kv5. Previously unreleased
7.- bomba (coba soundsystem) this track was the last track we finished before releasing coba coba, coba soundsystem is a.k.a. novalima dj’s rpp,rm,gs. Bomba plena an electro latin dancefloor groove
8.- tumbala (oreja remix) seiji’s house rework for tumbala.

Doombia! Huelepega Sound System

Huelepega sound system

Huelepega sound system

My friend Guillaume (Khiasma) received this week an interesting mixtape titled Los Ojos De Dios, Todos Somos Ilegales from a group of Toronto (Canada) who do experimental cumbia remix, Huelepega Sound System!

It’s really experimental stuff. They remix some cumbia rebajadas and slow it down again! They Call it Doombia!

This might not get you on the dancefloor, but it just might get you off the couch. This music starts with chopped and screwed Colombia-via-Mexican cumbia, with beats slowed down to a spooky, unsettling tempo. Live congas and timbales reinforce the rhythms, while droning keyboards and ricocheting vocal samples open up the sound. Everything gets mixed down in extreme dub. Tempos are subdivided and multiplied – folding the grooves inward and outward, messing with your expectations. The flow rambles and lurches, with dissonance buzzing throughout. To paraphrase the motto of Putumayo Records, doombia is “music guaranteed to make you feel stoned”. There are many different tangents in contemporary Latin music, but few explore such dark territory. Huelepega (named after the glue huffers of Monterrey and Caracas) bring an aggressive lack of polish to their sound. But don’t think that the Huelepegistas don’t know how to play – all four have channelled decades of DJing and performing into creating this startling new sound. Their forthcoming CDR “En Los Ojos De Dios, Todos Somos Ilegales” will be released in March 2009 on Toronto’s acclaimed noise label, Inyrdisk. It’s a natural partnership – Huelepega takes its place alongside such Toronto experimentalists as Women In Tragedy and Disguises to build a greater overstanding of just how alternative Latin music can get. Huelepega Sound System is a reflection and abstraction of the many sonic forces at work in the Latin diaspora in North America. Huelepega isn’t the music you heard in the resort on your last vacation, on the contrary, Huelepega is music from the gutter, inspired by the dark places of Latin America that the consulate warned you about. Huelepega is for ‘los desplazados, los olvidados y los desaparecidos’.

Cumbia con Bass

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

I’ve just recorded this weekend a small mix inspired by the cumbia sonidera.
I really enjoy the 70-90 sounds of that mix. There’s clearly a big bass present all the way long that I really enjoy too!

Some of the track are from disc that I’ve bought in Tepito Mexico DF.

Put it loud!

Rebajadas! Karol y sur amor gitano!

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

First of all,

I’ll present myself. I’m Benoit and I’m doing with Khiasma and Jeune Premier the radio show Masala Cism 89.3 in Montréal. I’m really happy and proud to have the occasion to write on La Congona! I’m harvesting a lot in cumbia and I’m really happy to share what I’m finding with all of you, cumbia aficionados.

For my first post, I want to share 3 tracks from Karol y su Amor gitano remixed that sound terribly deep and intense. This Cumbia rebajadas is made essentially in Mexico where they slow down the beat to adapt to a typical dance and to get more bass.

Karol y su amor is quite famous in Mexico. I’m not a big fan of the original track.

I really prefer the version made by the sonideros and believe it or not, the voice in those track is originally a girl voice.
